You may have forgotten this lesson in your elementary school, but the concept of land ownership has existed since the dawn of civilization. It started with tribal people using land exclusively and passing that right to use the land to generations. The connection was more sacred than a sense of ownership.
But when civilization moved towards farming, a sense of ownership started taking real form as now the land was the source of main food and became the reason for permanent settlement. Land ownership developed.
The development of ownership was influenced by the ruling elite, who had power and wealth. Land became something to conquer, hold, and use for resources. The land became another form of wealth. One could own more land, produce more food, and make more profit. This strengthened the idea of ownership.
During this period, land became a commodity. This led to boundaries between empires.
Within kingdoms, people with high influence started focusing more on land ownership. This shaped today’s land ownership. Our legal system has an understanding that “owning” land provides rights as opposed to outright ownership. As long as you pay property taxes, you have exclusive rights to sell or lease.
Now what does this little story of land ownership tell us? Owning a piece of land strengthens your foundation in society. People choose to adopt different lifestyles, but the majority have a dream to own a piece of land or property which they can call home. But then there are people like Elon Musk, Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos who own hundreds of millions in properties.
Owning property is a millennia-old thing. But sometimes when grapes are unreachable, rather than putting in extra effort, the fox has to blame the grapes for sourness!
